It has been a legal requirement since the 1980s to wear a hard hat if there is a risk of head injury. If you are employed by someone then they should provide you with one, if not you must provide it for yourself. Construction is one of the most dangerous trades around, with a 45-year career giving you a 1 in 200 chance of a fatal injury.
