We’re nearly coming to an end with our series of articles where we look at the different industries we stock workwear for.

In this week’s article, we’re spotlighting the welding & foundry industry.

One of the most dangerous industries to work in is where workers are constantly working with dangerous equipment and machinery.

Welding gear needs to be incredibly flame retardant to prevent any sparks igniting clothing.

Another important attribute for welding and foundry gear to have is UV protection. The intensity of the light produced can induce sunburns and even blindness. As such it is vital to make sure no skin is left exposed.

Headwear

Perhaps the only piece of workwear we don’t stock at Granite is a welding mask. These are usually provided by your employer.

With that being said, other workwear includes a hard hat, to help keep your head safe from heavy machinery or falling debris.

In the colder months accessories such as scarves, helmet liners, and in some cases a balaclava can help provide warmth in colder working conditions.

Safety glasses and ear defenders may also be required when walking around the workplace to prevent any debris or hearing loss.

Bodywear

Bib and brace overalls are probably one of the first things a welder will look for. Having functionality in the form of many pockets and areas for tools can help you keep everything you need on you, whilst at the same time, giving you full protection against sparks and UV light as we discussed before.

A fleece, as well as thermal workwear, will help keep you warm in the colder months.

Potentially you may be required to wear a high-viz vest for maximum visibility for your co-workers and other staff, to help keep you and others safe.

Legwear

One of the main things you should consider is to keep yourself fully covered and we’ve discussed what to wear for bodywear, but for legwear, it should be a good pair of work trousers.

These have plenty of pockets, zips, and belt loops for many tools and accessories that you need to get your job done.

Trousers that are flame-resistant will help prevent the ignition of clothes, and in turn, prevent any serious injuries from happening.

Footwear

A solid pair of work boots is always advised, ones with a steel-cap-toe is even better and fit for purpose considering the dangers of the welding working environment.

Furthermore, a good pair of socks will help keep the feet comfortable due to the nature of standing on your feet all day and the stress you’re putting on them.
