As much as Hollywood makes out how dangerous working on an oil rig can be, it’s surprisingly true!

Films such as Deepwater Horizon, tell the events of the dangers that can happen on oil rigs in the middle of the ocean.

And without the correct training or even workwear, many workers’ lives can be at risk.

In this article, we’ll look at the type of workwear required in the oil and gas industry.

Headwear

First of all, helmets are more than likely required when working in this industry. This is to ensure you’re safe from falling debris or any type of machinery such as cranes that may not see workers down below and may cause an accident.

Furthermore, due to the harmful toxins in gasses and in order to breathe clean air, face masks may be a good option to help when working in dangerous environments.

Other accessories such as a helmet liner, a head torch and scarves can help aid you when working in cold and dark environments.

Bodywear

The main thing to consider here, as well as legwear, is high-viz clothing such as a vest or a jacket for maximum visibility amongst other coworkers and people operating heavy machinery.

Beneath a high-viz jacket, fleece or even thermal workwear can help keep you warm when working in cold environments and give you the extra bit of added comfort you need in order to carry out the job.

Legwear

As well as bodywear, the main thing to consider is high-viz clothing. Whether you choose to wear a high-viz jacket or high-viz trousers, or even both, you should consider at least one or the other to remain visible when working on the job.

Otherwise, a solid pair of workwear trousers with many pockets, loops and zips can help keep your personal belongings and torches, other accessories safe on you when you need them the most, they’re there.

Thermal wear is always recommended to help keep you warm when working in cold environments, especially on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean.

Footwear

A durable and strong pair of work boots should be worn to help with grip, comfort and if you can find work boots that include a steel cap toe, it can help protect your feet at all costs.

And of course, a comfortable, well-made pair of socks can even further go towards protecting your feet.
