Working on highways and motorways is an incredibly dangerous job.

Motorists are notorious for speeding through construction zones and if they’re not paying enough attention, then accidents are likely to occur.

Wearing high-viz clothing whilst working on a motorway or a highway should be a given. It helps protect workers from oncoming traffic and other motorists in bad weather conditions such as fog or low light times such as the night.

The purpose of this is so that motorists can see workers from a distance and have plenty of time to react accordingly.

In this article, we’ll be looking at the different clothing workers are required to wear when working on highways and motorways.

Headwear

Helmets, woolly hats and head torches are all good accessories to wear when working on motorways.

Potentially, helmets may be required with head torches when working at night. This may depend on the work being carried out and the company you work for, so it’s important to check.

Bodywear

The high-viz vest and jacket is what’s important here and should be a requirement when working on any road or motorway.

Thermals may be a good optional extra here, especially for Winter when temperatures drop and the weather becomes even more harsh and unpredictable.

Conversely, this is always worse for drivers who may not be able to see workers or warning signs in front of them. So wearing the correct and appropriate clothing in these situations is even more important.

Legwear

Whether you choose to wear high-viz trousers or a general pair of work trousers that has lots of pockets, zips and loops for tools and accessories is a good option to keep your belongings on you, safe and sound.

Thermal clothing will help keep your legs warm in the Winter and without restrictions, will allow you to carry out your job as normal.

Footwear

Footwear would include traditional working boots, trainers or even work shoes would not be a good choice here as you need full foot protection.

Socks would also be advised, especially for Winter.
