In this new series of articles, we’ll be taking a look at the different industries we provide workwear for.

We’ll look at what workwear is required to be worn for this industry and spotlighting different sectors as the weeks go on.

In this weeks article, we’ll be diving into the food processing industry, to get a better understanding of what workwear is required to work in this sector.

Headwear

It might sound obvious, but wearing a food cap can help prevent hairs from falling out of your head and into the food itself! That won’t go down well with the health and safety inspection.

So it’s best to be safe than sorry and invest in a good food cap to keep your hair out of your face and out of the food.

In some cases, safety glasses may also be required, as well as ear defenders - especially if you work in an extremely noisy environment that could damage hearing.

As well of course, given the recent times, a face mask will more than likely be standard practice too.

Bodywear

A white t-shirt, with a white long coat and in some cases an apron may be needed when working in the food production industry.

Let’s pause for a second and ask, why.

Well, when you’re working with food, it’s essential that everything is clean and there is no bacteria or any harmful agents that could get into the food, because, not only would it be a PR nightmare for the food manufacturing company, it could also prove to be extremely dangerous to consumers who buy the food in their local shops and supermarkets.

So in all cases, it’s important that you wash your hands, wear the required workwear for the job and be responsible for keeping it clean.

Legwear

Food trousers are standard and that goes for both men and women. There should be no loose skirts or dresses worn.

Why wear white in food production? Well, it not only signifies cleanliness, but it’s also a uniform to establish workers. If everyone wore their own clothes, it would look quite unprofessional and there may even be health and safety risks attached to that notion.

Furthermore, if there are any spills, accidents, it’s easier to see and take action, rather than everyone wearing their own clothes.

Footwear

Wellingtons should be a good option here, as they keep your feet dry from moving to a large industrial fridge/freezer that may have had a spill, back into the factory or production line itself.

You may even be required to wear shoe covers to keep your shoes clean and to not spread any unwanted bacteria.
