Whether it’s the building, roads, schools, offices around us, a civil engineer has been involved. Civil engineers are the ones who plan, design and manage construction projects to create and improve buildings that make up the majority of the UK… and the world in fact!

Therefore, they spend a lot of time on the project and are in many different locations, perhaps in an office where they are planning and designing a new build. To actually being on the building site to manage the construction project.

Depending on what stage the project is at, headwear may change frequently. But let’s assume that the Civil Engineer is on the building site, what should they wear to keep safe when on the job?

Headwear

A hard hat helmet is the go-to requirement for any building site in the UK. Why is this? Because if there is any danger of injury to the head, helmets are required by law to be worn.

So you can’t go wrong with a hard hat. Other accessories such as earplugs, safety glasses and masks may need to be worn depending on the type of project being carried out.

Bodywear

Of course the go-to here is a high-viz vest for complete visibility among other co-workers who may be operating heavy machinery.

Underneath it really depends on the person as to what they want to wear, a suit isn’t practical unless only visiting sporadically. But as we know most Civil Engineers are managing the project on a day-to-day basis.

So wearing something practical with complete freedom of movement should be worn.

Legwear

Again, we can’t stress this enough but wearing high-viz trousers, just protects you from not being seen and gives you maximum visibility both during the day and at night.

Otherwise underneath, again we would suggest a good pair of work trousers that allows for many pockets, zips and belt loops for numerous tools and personal belongings.

Footwear

Finally, for footwear, you ideally need to be wearing work boots that are strong enough and durable enough that they can withstand any falling debris or uneven surfaces that you may be stepping on.

Furthermore, if you're stood up for the majority of the time, you need to invest in a good pair of work boots that are comfortable for practical reasons.
