In our series of articles, we are spotlighting the different industries we stock workwear for.

In this week's article, we’re taking a look at chemical work.

Due to the hazardous nature of chemical work, reactions to cytotoxic and corrosive mean that skin must be covered at all times.

Furthermore, disposable equipment is needed in this industry due to the nature of chemicals even being used.

So let’s take a look at some of the workwear requirements for working in the chemical industry.

Headwear

As we’re dealing with chemicals here, workwear safety is important as any hazardous chemical can cause serious injuries.

Starting with headwear, potentially a helmet with ear defenders or a visor might be a good idea for full head protection.

Other accessories such as safety glasses or goggles may be required to avoid any splashing from the chemicals into the eyes.

Furthermore, full-body overalls that are splashproof and provide full-body protection including the head should be considered.

Finally, depending on the environment, face masks may need to be worn to prevent any harmful toxins from the chemicals entering the airways and may cause breathing issues.

Bodywear

Similar to headwear, the key here is to keep the body fully covered and safe from any harmful chemicals.

Overalls should be the go-to here, and ones that are splash-proof should be favoured.

Underneath comfortable clothing should be worn, maybe base layers to help keep the body warm in colder working conditions. But functionality should also be considered to help you move freely without restrictions in order to carry the job at hand.

Legwear

When it comes to legwear, splash-proof trousers are the go-to here. They should offer full protection against all chemicals. Ones that are orange or a lighter colour, may also help double up as high-visibility workwear to improve awareness amongst other colleagues when at work to reduce the chances of accidents and injuries occurring.

We would also advise base layers beneath the trousers for extra protection and warmth.

Footwear

A strong pair of work boots, with good grip and foot protection, will be fine here. It’s important to bed them in before working a full day in them to help with comfort when walking around the workplace.

A good pair of socks as well, will add an extra layer and keep the feet comfortable throughout the day.
