Following on from our series of industry spotlights, this week we’ll be taking a look at the workwear required for the Agriculture industry.

As always, we’ll be looking at the workwear needed for working in this industry from head to toe, and why it’s important to stick to what’s required!

Headwear

Starting with the headwear and this is where it’s a real mixed bag.

When working in the agricultural industry, most of the time you’ll be working outside or operating heavy machinery.

It all depends on what type of work you’re doing. If you’re out in the middle of the field, looking after your farm or cattle, then a beanie hat such as the Carhartt watch hat is probably a good option to keep warm.

But if you’re operating or driving heavy machinery, a helmet might be a better choice of headwear, to protect you from any accidents that may happen.

Ear defenders may also be a good option as the machinery used can sometimes be excruciatingly loud and damage your eardrums.

Bodywear

When working in agriculture, more often than not, you’ll be a lone worker, sometimes in the middle of a field or the countryside if you’re driving a tractor all day. And sometimes you’ll be required to work at night.

In which case, being noticed is important and vital to your own safety.

If for any reason you were to have an accident, the only way you may be found in a field is by your clothing.

This is why it’s important to wear high-viz coveralls for full visibility.

In the colder months, base layers are a good clothing choice to keep you warm and comfortable.

As well as fleece jackets, but if you choose to wear this in Winter, also wear a high-viz jacket on top of it for visibility.

Legwear

Similar to bodywear, we’d advise wearing high-viz trousers for safety reasons.

But in other cases, work trousers with many pockets and zips will help you carry the tools you need to carry out your job.

As well as keeping personal belongings on you when you need them such as a mobile phone and or a walkie talkie for communications.

Thermal wear is a good option for the colder months to help keep you warm and comfortable when on the job.

Footwear

Work boots are the best option here and if you can find a pair of boots with a steel toe cap, even better! As the machinery you may be operating is heavy and dangerous, so full protection is advised.

Thermal socks for winter is a good option to keep warm and shouldn’t restrict your feet when driving a tractor or other machinery.
