Getting the boots covered in muck then being stored without first properly cleaned could bring on a chemical reaction called hydrolysis. This would eat away at the best of boots , especially PU boots if not regularly cleaned well. The rate in which hydrolysis affects boots can be reduced by washing boots off daily and using a cleaner such as reviveX once a week, this will help protect the material and prolong the life of the boots.
