Important:

You may be aware that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has released new scientific evidence that exposure to mild steel welding fume can cause lung cancer and possibly kidney cancer in humans, as such mild steel welding fume has been reclassified as a human carcinogen by the Workplace Health Expert Committee.

The HSE have amended their approach to welding fume with immediate effect and so all welding must now be undertaken either with local exhaust ventilation (LEV) in place or Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE). Welding outside requires RPE too. All RPE must be face fit tested and records kept on file.

We would advise that face fit testing will also need repeating and would suggest that this is done every two years. 

Should you receive a visit from the HSE you should expect them to ask about your welding arrangements and if you do not have LEV in place and RPE has not been face fit tested then they will issue an Improvement Notice. Should they consider the arrangements inadequate they could issue a Prohibition Notice requiring all welding to be stopped immediately until suitable arrangements are in place. An inspector could reject face fit testing alone if welding is a regular activity until air monitoring has been undertaken proving that you are managing the risks to workers.
